Memorize Easy Songs
At some point, you’re going to have to leave your songbook at home. I’m sorry to say it, but it’s true! You can’t carry that thing around with you everywhere you go, can you?
It’s always good to memorize the songs you perform often. This will get easier as you get more comfortable with the different chords and once your ear gets trained up a bit, but you might find that you’ve already started memorizing some of your favorite songs already, just from practising them often.
Choosing a Song
When memorizing a song, choose one that is simple and easy to remember. A lot of the songs we’ve learned so far in this beginner’s course are pretty straightforward, so you might want to start with one of them.
Whichever song you choose, look for one that only uses a few chords, preferably ones you’re already familiar with. Also, try to find one that uses a repetitive chord progression. Many songs use the same pattern throughout the whole song with little to no variation between verses and choruses. These songs are super easy to memorize!
How to Practice
When memorizing a song deliberately, the first step is to figure out the chords. Next, look at the chord progression. Write it out, if you need to! For some people, it really helps to see it all written out. It’s just a matter of personal preference and learning styles.
From there, you really just need to practice playing the song! If you’re worried about your memorization skills, I think you’ll find that this comes to you much more easily than you might be expecting.
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, either, especially in these early stages! Work on getting a solid repertoire of four or five songs that you love playing. You’ll be a hit at the next party!
