There are many reasons why you should create your songbook. I mention this often, but playing the songs you love will improve your guitar playing faster! It motivates you to practice and inspires you to play. The goal here is to have a personal reference book to access songs you love and play with confidence easily!

How To Create Your Songbook

There are a few options to make your own songbook repertoire. I recommend having a display folder with clear pockets where you can put pieces of paper inside.

Every time you learn a song and dig it, you can print it out and put it in this display folder. First, print out the song sheet with the guitar chord and lyrics above.

Once you combine a few songs, you'll have this personal songbook you'll love to play! These songs should become part of the ones you practice regularly.

Saving your song sheets as PDF files can also be super handy. That way, you have a backup of all the songs you love. Also, if you forget your songbook, you'll be able to access them anytime digitally.

Why You Should Create Your Songbook

An important part of the process is having a collection of songs you can play with confidence. Whether you're playing by yourself, with family and friends, or performing for a gig, this will help you improve your stage performance and musical confidence.

Once a week or month, go through your songbook and practice all the songs. That way, you'll be prepared for any upcoming event!

Creating your songbook is awesome when you meet other musicians, and you're not sure what to play. Just grab the book, and you’ll have a selection of what you can currently play.

Make sure the lyrics are nicely printed so others can look at them and play along with you. And if you’re at a party or gathering, everyone will be able to sing along!

Having a physical printout version will also help you remember them. In a way, it almost frees a bit of hard drive in your mind.

I recommend don't have too many songs in your repertoire. That can be overwhelming and make it difficult to decide which one to play. Keep around 20 songs you love playing at the moment!
