JUSTIN Ear Training Exercises (S6)
The key to learning music well is to use your ears. Don't forget that music is about sound and listening so this part of your guitar study will help you a lot more than you will realise initially.
REMEMBER to stop the vid right after the chord you are trying to identify because...
The Last Thing You Hear, Stays In Your Ear!
Take it slow and don't expect results too quickly, it will take some time develop your listening skills.
Chord Quality Recognition (CQR)
Here we're continuing on from the last stage, just working on the same three qualities. Take it slow, focus on the quality of the chord (not how well I play it, silly! The type of chord it is...) Try and get a feeling for each of the chords; eventually you want to know the chord by feeling, not analysis!
Sound Palette: Major or Minor or 7 (but now the root will change)
Single Sound Recognition (SSR)
The chord palette is growing now, so there are many choices! Take your time, pause the track, and write down what chords I play. Before you just guess, really try and listen to the quality of the chord. Try and hear how many thick strings are being played, because that can give you a hint to the chord, and you should be looking for all the clues that you can find.
I play the chords a little faster now so you have to work on your pause technique! it also means that you will hear the chord for a slightly shorter time now as well, which makes you work a little harder!
Chord Palette: E, A, D, Em, Am, Dm, G, C, G7, C7, B7, D7, E7, A7, Fmaj7
Chord Progression Recognition (CPR)
As in the last stage, I will be playing the chords for either two or four strums in each bar. Try and hear when a sequence goes back to a chord that has been played before; it can speed things up quite a lot when you get that skill down.
Remember that there are 4 strums per bar, so writing down how many times a chord is strummed in each bar is a good idea.
1. |__________|__________|__________|__________| 2. |__________|__________|__________|__________| 3. |__________|__________|__________|__________|
You'll find the answers here :) but no cheating.
